Bittorrent - Slow Download ?
++++++++++++

When using bittorrent, oft the download is pathetic, especially if you pay attention to your security or you are a careful user ;)

Why do I say that, speaking as an average user, you tend to be careful with everything and try not to mess around too much, you set up your firewalls etc etc. But you do not understand how it works, and often youget hit by the other end of the stick. Put another way. Crossing the road, you really should look both ways then cross. But imagine if you were paranoid and you tip toe a few steps, then look both ways suspiciously and ad nauseum.

Same thing with bittorrent, it tends to reward the careless user, the first time at least, as it assumes a clear connection, i.e. ICMP, direct connection etc etc. But most modems nowadays come with default NAT, or perhaps you have a wireless router. All these serve as defenses, but they can also lock your computer from the world. (and vice versa)

So how now brown cow? Is chicken little telling the truth this time?

Well not really, with the wireless router's firewall, just add in port forwarding. And depending on the bittorrent client you use, you release that port. On this note try to use the official one. Bittorrent is FREE software NOT FREEWARE, this means it is GNU, the source is FREE, the philosophy is FREE, if you are charged, be it cash or privacy you are RIPPED. Note that bitlord installs spyware. Bitlord is easy to install and bypasses my NAT and Wireless router, so I think they did something to the code. On install it works like magic, off the shelf, like magic. But it also install spyware and tells you to pay to get more speed. i am not sure how that is done, but i am pretty sure it is less benign than the official bittorrent. For myself i had spywares installed when I installed bitlord. I cleansed it promptly so that was the end of that and bitlord still works. So if you are a sucker for off the shelf efficiency, bitlord is still viable.

Now for the rest of us.

It is TRUE when they say the torrent client does not matter :)

If port forwarding does not work for you. And you have a DSL modem like mine, which in the advanced section says something something NAT or NAPT, this will usually have a set default server. Just set your computer as the default server (using its internal IP address e.g. 192.168.9.9 or 10.1.1.1 depending on what it actually is of course)

check your IP using ifconfig for linux, ipconfig for windows on commandline

And thats it! Your bittorrent will now run as per normal! No security breach! You do not have to throw away your firewall!

On that note if you are using some application level firewall, you need to set that to medium, ingeneral this allows ICMP so that you can still communicate with other computers, but disallows netbios. NetBios is usually bad unless your server is open to INTERNAL computers.
