OOoBasic crash course: Working with files

OpenOffice.org's OOoBasic gives users tools to programmatically access and manipulate files. To see how that works, we'll create a simple macro that allows you to save text snippets from the current document in a plain text file. This macro can be used to store text fragments from multiple documents in one text file, or to save deleted passages in an external file in case you need them later.

Free Standards Group launches LSB Developer Network

The Free Standards Group (FSG) is scheduled to announce today its answer to the Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) -- the Linux Standard Base (LSB) Developer Network. The LSB Developer Network (LDN) will combine community content with original content in one convenient location to provide developers with information on writing portable Linux applications.

The FSG has partnered with O'Reilly Media to develop the site and brought on Martin Streicher, editor-in-chief of Linux Magazine, to provide editorial direction for the site and develop custom content.

It does'nt seem clear but this is the launch of LDN (LSB Developer Network)

Zombies Try to blend in with the crowd

"The trend to Web-based command and control is really about protecting the command-and-control center and hiding traffic from network administrators," said Randy Abrams, director of technical education at Eset, a security software company. "Web traffic is ubiquitous. IRC channels are well-known and relatively easily located and shut down."

A spambot Trap !!!!

Cloak of Invisibility

In this first successful experiment, researchers from the United States and England were able to cloak a copper cylinder.

It's like a mirage, where heat causes the bending of light rays and cloaks the road ahead behind an image of the sky.

Ubuntu Takes a Page from Red Hat's Playbook

David Wolf submits: CNET has a decent article on Friday by Stephen Shankland about how Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu Linux, plans on building a global business by giving away its software and selling service, a strategy originally adopted by the current major Linux marketer, Red Hat (RHAT), which it has since rejected. The article takes a rather dim view of the approach, questioning whether that's going to make it for Mark Shuttleworth and his band of South African software revolutionaries.

Laugh on, CNET, but in China I don't think anyone would so much as giggle. As the nice folks over at Microsoft (MSFT) and the Business Software Alliance will happily tell you, it's proving exceptionally hard to talk people in China into paying for software that can be downloaded in a zip file or shrinkwrapped and sold at a counter. I'm not sure it's going to get any easier.

XUL Firefox XPInstall

"XPInstall enables users to effortlessly install new XUL applications over the Internet or from corporate intranet servers. To install a new application the user need only click a hypertext link on a web page or in an email message and accept the new package through a Mozilla install dialog."

This portion really excites me as it means that a corporate can actually start to build its own applications on top of FF =D !!
