Second Life
Well I haven't actually tried 2nd life, but based on what I have heard, there are two fundamental flaws with it.
IT was always meant to overcome the limitations of space and time.
2nd Life contradicts that, as
1) You try to create objects to represent things
2) You have to travel and explore a fair bit
The best analogy would be
1) the online inventories, when space limitations are overcomed,
2) The myriad search functions, when we WANT to explore quickly.
In some discussion, one advantage of 2nd Life is the fact that people who cannot relate well in real life, might have an outlet by creating an online identity.
2 outcomes came out of this discussions.
1) A certain type of people will likely use 2nd Life extensively. And this group of people will attract each other in this "community". We were a little worried about the isolation and the repurcussions that could occur as a result of that isolation.
2) The idea of creating an online identity is not new, onlines massive RPG games like Asheron's Call have done this about 5 plus years ago and similar games are still running rampant. In fact I feel that games are a better way to "hook" people, and its already been done. 2nd Life seems to want to go the route of simulating real life as opposed to fantasy. In terms of corporates, it may actually be able to pull this off, but it does seem a little contrived. And the interchange of Lindent currency and real world currency will always be controversial. Paypal is only beginning to have widespread acceptance, and that is with integration with credit cards, and recently banks and even more recently laws that govern the jurisdiction of how fraud can be handled. The achievements of paypal were not build in a day, even at internet speed =) What more of 2nd Life? Time will tell I guess.
